I was born in Idaho but since my father was a bit of a wanderer, I have lived in Arizona, California, Oregon and Idaho. I grew up in the West, am in love with the Northwest and plan to be here most of my life. I traveled to Mexico quite a bit growing up and lived there with my kids and husband for a year. I love it and miss it dearly so I have to visit as often as I am able. I am interested in fabric, clothing, sewing and all of the fiber art techniques that go with it.
My work tends to focus on geometric and/or abstract shapes with texture. For the black and white pieces, I found inspiration in the impressionistic sketches (scribbles) of a toddler. To me, the combination of these sketches connects to the wider world and galaxy surrounding us. It gives the feeling of infinite space and the unknown. I am drawn to the beauty in the macabre, and, through my artwork, attempt to achieve order, beauty and resolution in the chaos of death. To assist in this aim, I’ve also been inspired by abstract forms and colors found in nature-- those varying shapes, textures and colors found therein.
Depending on the piece, various techniques are utilized. I tend to use a combination of machine and hand sewing. Other techniques I incorporate include tufting, screen printing, Blackwork embroidery with crochet thread, serging, embroidery, applique, dyeing and painting.
